According to the website 247wallst.com, South Florida has two Cities in the top 10 WORST run Cities. A distinction we are obviously not proud of.
The story, "The Best and Worst Run Cities in America", ranks Hialeah # 5, and Miami #2 being the worst run.
Hialeah was ranked 5th based on factors like violent crime 3.78 per 1,000 people, unemployment rate tied for 9th at 14.1%. Home prices between 2007 and 2011 fell by 44% in Hialeah, median household
income of $27,208 in 2011, 15.5% worked in the generally low-paying retail trade, and nearly 40% of city residents are without health
insurance, higher than any other large city in the U.S.
Miami is ranked 2nd based on a violent crime rate of 11.98 per 1,000 people, unemployment of 12.4% Between 2007 and 2011, the median home value in Miami fell by 43.5%. The nation’s lowest median household
incomes, at under $29,000, while 31% of residents lived below the
poverty line — nearly twice the U.S. rate of 15.9%. Still the city joined with
Miami-Dade County to pay for almost 80% of the more-than $600 million
cost of building a new baseball stadium for the Miami Marlins. The deal
has caused significant uproar. While taxpayers pay extremely high costs
to service the stadium debt, the team has traded many of its top
players. In 2011, the SEC launched an investigation into the agreement.
A side note about the Mayor of Miami, Carlos Alvarez who allowed the stadium deal to happen was recalled about two years ago and congratulations are in order. He just came out of seclusion and won...an amateur bodybuilding championship.
